Situation

During the week of November 3rd to November 10th, I set out on a UI/UX design challenge. I decided to enter the UX Bootcamp + Scholastic Book Fairs Creative Jam Contest. My partner and I had less than a week to design a digital experience to solve a Scholastic-inspired challenge. This opportunity allowed me to use my design and prototyping skills, network with other UX designers, and receive constructive feedback from experts.

Challenge

Our mission was to design a mobile tool to help communities host book-sharing events, safely, in a pandemic. No matter how large or small the event, it had to introduce or increase access to new or used books to school-age children.

Process

Brainstorming

I immediately put pen to paper and started to let my creative juices flow. There were so many directions I could go. I also considered a book sharing "swip left" tinder style app, but my heart was set on using the concept of augmented reality.

Wireframes

Wireframes were built using Adobe XD. The wireframes acted as a blueprint that allowed me to gauge how the user would interact with the interface before incorporating text, typography, and images. At this stage in the design process, place holder shapes were used to ensure the architecture of the site was user friendly and solved pain points as outlined in the book fair challenge.

Prototyping and Final Art Board

Prototyping allowed my teammate and I to ideate, experiment with, and bring our concepts to life. We used the prototype to visualize and interact with our app before finalizing the art board. I also used prototyping to ensure an optimal user flow and to test out the effectiveness of videos, sounds, and animation within the prototype.

Style Guide

The style guide allowed my teammate and I to design in a clear and cohesive way to ensure consistency across app pages. We chose two friendly shades of blue. For the font, we chose the inviting Montserrat. Buttons and component states were created to allow for efficient design.
